Street named after Nelly Sachs (Nantes, France)

Nelly Sachs (b. Berlin, German Empire, 1891 – d. 1970, Stockholm, Sweden) was a German poet and dramatist who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1966. As a Jewish woman, she was forced to flee her home in Berlin-Schöneberg, Germany. Her escape to Sweden with her elderly mother in 1940 was enabled by her friend Selma Lagerlöf, who was influential enough to intervene with the Swedish royal family and thus save Sachs’ life. Sachs and her elderly mother lived in Stockholm, and Sachs became a Swedish citizen in 1952. Her experiences resulting from the rise of the Nazis in World War II Europe transformed her into a poignant spokesperson for the grief and yearnings of her fellow Jews.
