Caroline Lucretia Herschel (b. Hanover, Germany, 1750 – d. Hanover, Germany, 1848) was a German-born British astronomer. Caroline left Hanover in 1772 to Bath, where she joined her brothers. She significantly contributed to astronomy, jointly with her brother William. She discovered several comets and was the first woman to receive a salary as a scientist and the first woman in England to hold a government position. After her brother died in 1822, Caroline moved back to Hanover.
