Marie Bashkirtseff, née Maria Konstantinovna Bashkirtseva (b. Gavrontsi, Russian Empire, 1858 – d. 1884, Paris, France) was an artist born near Poltava (now Ukraine). She lived and worked in Paris and died from tuberculosis at age 25. She produced a remarkable, if fairly conventional, body of work in her short lifetime, exhibiting at the Paris Salon as early as 1880 and almost every year thereafter until her death. Her journal was published after her death and has since been translated into English. She was included in the 2018 exhibit “Women in Paris 1850–1900”.
