Elementary School named after Vieira da Silva

Maria Helena Vieira da Silva (b. Lisbon, Portugal, 1908 – d. 1992, Paris, France) studied at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts and moved to Paris in 1928 to continue her studies. Her works are situated between figuration and abstraction. In her paintings, Vieira da Silva was concerned with revealing ambiguities of space and depth represented on a flat surface. Throughout her career, she maintained a coherent and authentic path that was independent of other artistic currents. Vieira da Silva was the first woman to receive the Grand Prix National des Arts awarded by the French Ministry of Culture in 1966.
