Elsie Inglis (b. Nainital, India 1864 – d. 1917, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK) was a suffragette, surgeon, and nurse who campaigned for the creation of women-staffed hospitals. This gave birth to the Scottish Women’s Hospitals during the First World War, and the SWH became fundamental units in the fight against epidemics in the conflict. Working in France, Greece, Serbia, and Russia, Elsie Inglis succumbed to cancer a short while after tirelessly caring for sick soldiers during the Serbian Typhus epidemic.
