Monika (29 years old) moved from North Macedonia to Slovenia in 2017 to complete a Master’s Degree in International and Diplomatic Studies.

Before moving to Slovenia and while being a Law student in North Macedonia, Monika worked both in North Macedonia and, during the summers in the U.S.A. Indeed, she partook in a program to student work in the U.S.A. in 2015, 2016, and 2018, when she had already moved to Slovenia. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and after completing her thesis, Monika returned to North Macedonia in 2020 and decided to stay as she works on N.G.O. projects and the creation of social media content. Besides, Monika is involved in the Basketball Federation projects, as she used to before moving to Slovenia.

According to Monika, during her migration experience, she encountered and faced various situations autonomously, which made her grow up. During her interview, Monika declares that she tries to cultivate gratitude towards the place where she lives, even though she misses the friends she met in Slovenia. She ponders her permanence in North Macedonia, and she aims to develop a project to contribute to society.

For Monika, the object that best represents her migration experience is a shirt from the Slovenian National basketball team. She received it as a gift from the Slovenian team when she worked as a tour guide during a basketball championship in Skopje one month before departing for Slovenia. She brought the shirt to Slovenia and back to North Macedonia when she returned.
