Agnès Varda (b. Brussels, Belgium, 1928 – d. 2019, Paris, France) was a film director, screenwriter, photographer and artist, born in Belgium to a Greek father who was a refugee from Asia Minor and a French mother from Sète, in the South of France, where the family lived on a boat during WWII. Agnès then moved to Paris where her pioneering film work became central to the development of the widely influential French “Nouvelle Vague” (lit. New Wave) film movement in the 1950s and 1960s.
