Monument to Rosa Chacel

Rosa Clotilde Chacel Arimón (b. Valladolid, Spain, 1898 – d. 1994, Madrid, Spain) was a Spanish writer. When the Spanish Civil War broke out, Chacel worked as a nurse. She also contributed to literary magazines during this period. Chacel was forced to move multiple times due to the war conflict. She lived in Barcelona, Valencia, and Paris with her son. After the end of the war, the family reunited and traveled to Brazil, where they lived for three decades, with short stays in Buenos Aires. In 1959, she won a Guggenheim Fellowship, which allowed her to travel to New York and return to writing. Chacel worked in New York until 1961 when she returned to Spain. In May 1963, Chacel returned to Brazil, where she remained until 1977, when her husband died. She then decided to stay in Spain for the rest of her life.
