Žemaitė was the pen name of Julija Beniuševičiūtė-Žymantienė (b. Plungé, Russian Empire, 1845 – d. Marijampolė, Lithuania, 1921). She was one of the major participants in the Lithuanian National Revival. In 1912, she moved to Vilnius, where she worked as an administrator and on the editorial staff of several publications. During World War I, she first emigrated to Russia and then to the United States.
