Street named after Gisèle Freund

    Gisèle Freund, born Gisela Freund (b. Berlin-Schöneberg, Germany, 1908 – d. 2000, Paris, France), was a German-born French photographer and photojournalist (also known as a French sociologist), famous for her documentary photography and portraits of writers and artists. She left Berlin when Adolf Hitler took over, fleeing to France and then Argentina before returning to Paris later in her life. Her best-known book is Photographie et société (1974). In 1977, she became president of the French Association of Photographers, and in 1981, she took the official portrait of French President François Mitterrand.
