Maria Callas (b. New York, USA, 1923 – d. 1977, Paris, France), born Maria Anna Sofia Cecilia Kalogeropoulos, was an American-born Greek soprano who was one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century. She was born in Manhattan, New York City, to Greek immigrant parents. She received her musical education in Greece at age 13 and later established her career in Italy.
