Administrative Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs of the Republic of Latvia, Department of prisoners of war and refugees, 1919-1944

The Administrative Department of the Republic of Latvia, in addition to other tasks, was also responsible for the re-evacuation of refugees and prisoners of war to Latvia after World War One and the Latvian War of Independence. Among them were a significant number of women who returned to Latvia and needed to face all legal practices to do so. The content of the documents consists of 4,136 stored files, with a large part of them specifically related to women, in the Rēzekne quarantine and the documents of the refugee release commissions established at the Riga staging point. The purpose of these centers was to gather information about the identities, political views, health conditions, and other important details of refugees, optants, and defectors who arrived. The documents provide information on women returning to Latvia, including their places of origin, as well as migration during the war.
