Personal fonds of Ilse Emilie Frida Guðnason

This fonds contains the correspondence of librarian Ilse Emilie Frida Guðnason (1914–2004, née Fortham or Forthmann) from Hamburg in Germany, who immigrated to Iceland in 1936 and moved to the Westman Islands after marrying Haraldur Guðnason on 28 May 1940. She was in the Westman Islands when the eruption that would eventually lead to part of the village being buried under lava began on 23 January 1973, but she and her husband were able to save the books and the library was rebuild; she was among the inhabitants who returned to the island after the eruption had ended to rebuild the town.
