    Petition of Mary Gorman, Ballinacarrig, County Westmeath, to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, seeking government aid with travel to New South Wales, [Australia] to join her family there; noting that just herself and her elder brother remain at home following the departure of other family members to that location where her father [Michael Gorman] was transported in 1820 for stealing a horse. Also reply from Edward Geoffrey Smith Stanley, Chief Secretary, to Edgeworth, declaring that Mary Gorman should make her way to Cork where she should report to Francis D Murphy, keeper of the convict penitentiary there, and await further instructions for the journey. Letter from [F] Edgeworth, Edgeworthstown, County Longford, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary of Ireland, referring to the application of [Cathleen] Gorman and children for assisted emigration to New South Wales; adding the woman is most thankful for the offer of free passage but wishes to learn if she will need clothing and provisions for the voyage, being ‘a mere beggar’; noting also the ages and names of her five children. Also a ‘List of Applicants for their Wives and Families to be sent to Van Diemen’s Land at the Expense of the Crown, Recommended by the Governor of that Colony’; includes names of the families of Michael Gorman, Frances Cunningham and Bryan Kane. 4 items; 8pp
