Photograph of Elie Inglis, mounted and inscribed on reverse

The Women’s Library at the London School of Economics holds key papers of women migrants – such as a photograph of Elsie Inglis in her full doctorial robe. Eliza Maud « Elsie » Inglis (16 August 1864 – 26 November 1917) was a Scottish medical doctor, surgeon, teacher, suffragist, and founder of the Scottish Women’s Hospitals. Born in British India as her father worked for the East India Company, and died in England, she was the first woman to hold the Serbian Order of the White Eagle. She studied in Edinburgh and Paris, and visited the USA to improve her practice.
