The Miracle Doctor

This is the manuscript of a play co-authored under the pseudonym « Dvi Moteri » (Two Women) by Gabrielė Petkevičaitė-Bitė (1861–1943) and Julija Beniuševičiūtė-Žymantienė (1845–1921). The latter is best known by her pen name of Žemaitė, and was an important figure in the Lithuanian National Revival. A self-taught author whose first work was published when she was 40, she wrote in the Samogitian dialect about peasants, everyday life and women’s roles in society. She emigrated during World War I to Russia and later to the United States, where one of her sons had settled. She returned to Lithuania in 1921 and died in December of the same year.
