ŽEMAITĖ [pen name of Julija Žymantienė]

    This collection of autograph manuscripts, typescripts, correspondence, photographs and printed material was compiled by Juozas Rimantas (1908-1973), who researched the biography and work of popular Lithuanian author Julija Beniuševičiūtė-Žymantienė (1845–1921), best known by her pen name of Žemaitė, who emigrated to Russia and later to the United States during World War I. She left the United States again for her homeland of Lithuania in 1921, where she died several months later.
