DOCUMENTARY
Synopsis “In the Shadow. Women on the Move” sheds light on the challenges and resilience of migrant women across Europe, with accounts of their life journeys marked by strength and courage. The film’s objective is to showcase the challenges and strengths of migrant women across Europe. It is structured around eleven interviews with women who have survived sexual violence, who crossed the Mediterranean by boat, or left South America to save their own and their families’ lives. It also features women who fled war (in Ukraine and Myanmar) or LGBT discrimination. Additionally, migration intermediaries and humanitarian workers involved in supporting migrant women, shelter centers, and social workers, share their perspectives. The impact of women’s migration on men and subsequent generations is also discussed, providing a broad range of migrant profiles and geographical coverage. The tackled themes include forced, family, and individual migrations; LGBTQI+ migrations; intermediaries and humanitarian workers; and transgenerational migration patterns. These 52 minutes are filled with emotion, strength, and personal stories. The main goal is to pay tribute to women who show rare resilience and strength, and yet are often invisible in migration discourses. Men’s perspectives are also included, notably through the testimony of Sean Binder (co-worker of Sarah Mardini, whose story inspired the Netflix film “The Swimmers”).
