Pirita Frigren (PhD) has been working as a university teacher of Cultural Heritage Studies at the University of Turku, Finland, since 2019. She is based in the Degree Programme of Cultural Production and Landscape Studies at the campus of Pori. She is a historian with a special interest in 19th century maritime and gender history. In 2016, she defended her PhD thesis entitled « Merchant Sailors’ Spouses, Household Economy and Female Agency in the Finnish Seaports, c. 1830-1870 » at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. She has also studied seafarers’ international work-related mobility as well as the Finnish Seamen’s Mission as an intermediate of migration.

Pirita Frigren is also the editor-in-chief of Genos, the peer-reviewed journal published by the Genealogical Society of Finland. She is a board member of the The Finnish Economic History Association and The Finnish Association for Maritime History. Between 2015 and 2019, she was the Finnish correspondent for the International Federation for Research in Women’s History (IFRWH) newsletter.
