Interview of Laura (from Italy to Denmark)

Find out more on women migrants across Europe with our documentary available HERE

Laura (aged 32) left Italy for Denmark at the age of 23

Her first trip was an Erasmus experience during her Master’s in medical biology. At 24, she moved to Denmark for her research career, and got a PhD in immunology and infectious diseases. Today, she is an Assistant Professor at the University of Copenhagen and a part-time researcher at the hospital.

According to Laura, migrating requires quickly developing skills to live in a new country, which in her experience ultimately provided her independence and confidence.

During her interview, she declares that she misses the ease of planning things with family and friends who are far from her. She hopes to keep working in her career and research field and get settled, maybe in Denmark, and maybe have a family. At the same time, she would like to “always keep a little bit fresh” and be challenged by her experience of having moved to another country.

For her, the object that best represents her migration experience is a scrapbook with the memories from her Erasmus experience in Denmark that she started making in Italy before leaving to start her career in Denmark. She keeps updating the scrapbook.
