Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun (b. Paris, France, 1755 – d. 1842, Paris, France) was a French portrait painter at the turn of the 19th century. Vigée Le Brun created 660 portraits and 200 landscapes. Her paintings are owned by major museums, such as the Louvre in Paris,the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, the National Gallery in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and many other collections in Europe and the United States. During the Summer of 1789, while painting the portrait of Comtesse du Barry, Louis XV’s lover, she was interrupted by an attack from the French revolutionaries. In October 1789, as the French royal family was taken to Paris, Vigée Le Brun and her daughter left the capital city dressed as workers, in exile to Rome. She then went on a Grand Tour in Italy. She then moved to Vienna, Austria, where she was protected by the imperial family because of her links with Marie-Antoinette. She then traveled across Europe and settled in Russia between 1795 and 1801. She came back to Paris in 1802.
