Audrey Kathleen Ruston (b. Ixelles, Belgium, 4 May 1929 – d. 20 January 1993, Tolochenaz, Switzerland) was a British actress. Because of her father’s job, she spent her childhood between different countries such as Belgium, England, and the Netherlands, which allowed her to speak six languages (Dutch, English, French, Spanish, German and Italian). Her father wanted her to be educated in England, so she was sent to Kent to study in a small school in Elham.
In the aftermath of the Second World War, she began her dancing career in 1945, and became a film and fashion icon. Her more striking roles were in Breakfast at Tiffany‘s (1961) and My Fair Lady (1964). She won numerous awards, like the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1953 for her role in Roman Holiday (1953), three BAFTA Awards for Best British Actress in a Leading Role, and ten Golden Globe Award Nominations.
From 1988, she dedicated her life to humanitarian aid, especially with the UNICEF (she had contributed since 1954). She received posthumously the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1993 for her work. She died at the age of 63 from cancer in Tolochenaz, Switzerland.
The monument is placed in the Audrey Hepburn Square in Tolochenaz, Switzerland. The bust of the actress was donated by her sons to the town of Tolochenaz in 2012.
