Avenue named after Queen Sofia (Athens, Greece)

Sofía of Greece and Denmark (b. Corfu, Greece, 1914 – d. 2001, Bavaria, Germany) was a member of the Spanish royal family, who was Queen of Spain from 1975 to 2014 as the wife of Juan Carlos I. As her family was forced into exile during the Second World War, she spent part of her childhood in Egypt, returning to Greece in 1946. Attached to Nazism, Sofia and her in-laws therefore served as unofficial intermediaries between Nazi Germany and the European dynasties to which they were related. She completed her secondary education in a boarding school in Germany before returning to Greece where she specialized in childcare, music and archaeology.
