Civic Center named after Nermin Abadan Unat (Çiğli/İzmir, Turkey)

    Nermin Abadan Unat (b. Vienna, Austria, 1921 – still living) is a professor who was born to a Turkish father and a German mother. She came to Turkey permanently in 1936 and has a long history as a devout advocate of women’s rights. She graduated from Law School at Istanbul University and did her graduate studies as a Fulbright student at the University of Minnesota. She taught Political Science at the School of Political Science at Ankara University. She specializes in mass communication and electoral studies, as well as women’s studies and international migration. At present, she is a professor of Political Science at Bosporus University in Istanbul, where she also teaches in the Women’s Research and Education Centre. She has also taught as guest professor at the University of Munich, City University of New York, the University of Denver, and the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). She has also served as senator in the Turkish Parliament and represented Turkey on the Committee of Equality of Women and Men in the Council of Europe. Her major publications in English are “Turkish Workers in Europe”, “Women in Turkish Society”, and “Women in the Developing World: Evidence from Turkey”.
