Grave of Elvire Popescu (Paris, France)

    Elvira Popescu (b. Bucharest, Romania, 1894 – d. 1993, Paris, France ), was a Romanian- French stage and film actress and theater director. She studied drama at the Music and Drama Conservatory in Bucharest.She was seen by Louis Verneuil, the French playwright, who urged her to move to Paris, which she did in 1924. Popescu became a highly successful actress in France and she also was the director of Theatre du Paris (1956-1965) and Theatre Marigny (1965-1978). Elvire Popescu was nicknamed by the French ”Notre Dame du Theatre” and in 1987 she received the honorary Moliere Award for career achievements.
