Françoise Giroud (b. Lausanne, Switzerland, 1916 – d. 2003, Neuilly-sur-Seine, France) was born in Switzerland to immigrant Sephardi Ottoman Jewish parents before moving to Paris. After starting her career as a screenwriter for the film industry, she became a prominent journalist, writer and politician. Giroud was the editor of Elle magazine from 1946 until 1953, when she co-founded the influential newsmagazine L’Express, which she edited until 1971 and directed until 1974. Between 1974 and 1977, she was tapped by French President Giscard d’Estaing to participate in the French national government, first as deputy minister for women’s rights and then as culture minister. From 1984 to 1988, Françoise Giroud was president of the NGO Action Internationale contre la Faim.
