Nathalie Sarraute (b. Ivanovo-Voznesensk, Russian Empire, 1900 – d. 1999, Paris, France) was a writer and lawyer. She was born into a family of Russian Jewish origin. She migrated to Paris with her father in 1909, and studied literature at the Sorbonne before reading history at Oxford and sociology in Berlin. She joined the French Resistance during World War II. Sarraute’s literary works, which brought her success and accolades later in life, are dedicated to the exploration of minute, ephemeral movements of feeling at the very limits of consciousness. Nathalie Sarraute was a major figure in the “Nouveau Roman » (new novel) movement in the 1950s and 1960s.
