Queen Elena di Savoia (b. Cetinje, Montenegro,1883- d. 1952, Montpellier, France) was an Italian queen and a Montenegrin princess, daughter of King Nikola I Petrović-Njegoš and sister of Princess Ksenija Elena grew up in Montenegro and at 12 years old the studied in Saint Petersburg, Russia until she was 18. She was interested in pastel painting, hunting and fishing. She also attended the Russian royal house. In 1886 she moved to Bari with her new husband, Vittorio Emanuele who became King of Italy. In recognition of her great faith and the charitable activities she supported, Pope Pius XI bestowed on her the highest honour at that time for a woman, the Golden Rose of Christianity, twice, in 1930 and 1937.
