Elza Johanna Emilija Lizete Pliekšāne (née Elza Rozenberga) (b. Zaļenieki parish, Russian Empire, 1865 – d. 1943, Jūrmala, Ostland / now Latvia) was a Latvian poet and playwright whose pen name was Aspazija. In 1886, she married and started publishing her first works in 1887 in the newspaper “Dienas Lapa”. In 1891, she got divorced and worked as a private tutor. In 1893, she settled in Riga as a journalist and soon her first plays, Vaidelote and Zaudētās tiesības, were staged. In 1897, she married again and moved to Panevėžys, Lithuania. For his political activities, her husband was sentenced to five years in exile in Russia from 1897 to 1903, and Aspazija followed him there. They translated Goethe’s work into Latvian and later returned to Latvia, where she continued writing. After the 1905 Revolution began, they fled to Switzerland and lived in exile in Castagnola from 1905 to 1920. After WWI, they returned to independent Latvia where Aspazija was an active feminist and was elected to the constitutional assembly for the Latvian Social Democratic Workers’ Party.
