Museum of Olga Kobylianska (Chernivtsi, Ukraine)

    Olga Kobylianska (b. Gura Humorului, Bukovina, Austro-Hungary, 1863 – d. 1942, Cernăuți, Cernăuți County, Romania) was a Ukrainian modernist writer and feminist. Self-taught, she spoke German, Ukrainian and Polish. After 1918, she got persecuted by the Romanian authorities when she strongly opposed the union of Bukovina with Romania. In 1940, she welcomed the Soviet occupation of Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina. She received Soviet citizenship and was admitted to the Union of Soviet Writers in Ukraine. In 1941, when the territory returned to Romania, she was judged by a military court. Yet, she died before the end of the trial on 21 March 1942, at the age of 78.
