Edith Stein (religious name Saint Teresia Benedicta a Cruce OCD; also known as Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross or Saint Edith Stein, b. Wroclaw, Poland, 1891 – d. 1942, Auschwitz, Poland) was a philosopher and Discalced Carmelite nun born into a German Jewish family in Breslau, then in the German Empire. She earned her doctorate in Freiburg in 1916 and obtained an assistantship there. She subsequently converted to Catholicism in 1922 after studying the life of Teresa of Avila. Facing increasing danger from Nazi persecution due to her Jewish background, she took refuge in the Carmelite monastery in Echt, Netherlands, in 1938 but was picked up by the Gestapo, and sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where she was murdered. She was canonized in 1998 as a martyr and saint of the Catholic Church, and is one of six co-patron saints of Europe.
