Gertrude Stein (b. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1874 – d. 1946, Neuilly-sur-Seine, France) was an eccentric American avant-garde novelist, poet, playwright, and art collector. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and raised in Oakland, California, Stein moved with her brother Leo, first to London and thereafter to Paris in 1903. In her childhood she had also lived in Vienna and Passy, France. She made France her home for the remainder of her life. In Paris she established a salon that became a famous meeting place for artists, writers and intellectuals such as Henri Matisse, Ernest Hemingway, and Pablo Picasso. She was particularly interested in Cubism and was one of the first collectors of works by these experimental artists. Her life- long companion was the author Alice B. Toklas (1877–1967) whose autobiography Stein published in 1933, making her and the Parisian artist collective famous in the United States.
