Residence of Constance Markievicz (Sligo, Ireland)

    Constance Georgine Markievicz (b. London, England,1868 – d.1927, Dublin, Ireland) was a politician, revolutionary, nationalist, suffragist, socialist, and the first woman elected to the Westminster Parliament. After studying to be a painter in London, she moved to Paris and enrolled at the prestigious Académie Julian where she met her future husband, Casimir Markievicz, an artist from a wealthy Polish family from present-day Ukraine. They then moved to Dublin where later, after becoming heavily involved in politics since 1908, she was elected Minister for Labour in the First Dáil, becoming the first female cabinet minister in Europe.
