Statue of Marguerite Yourcenar (Tivoli, Italy)

    Marguerite Yourcenar (b. Brussels, Belgium, 1903 – d. 1987 Bar Harbor, Maine, U.S) was a French novelist and essayist born in Brussels, Belgium, who became a US citizen in 1947. She left Europe because of World War II and in order to live together with her companion Grace Frick. Winner of the Prix Femina and the Erasmus Prize, Marguerite Yourcenar was the first woman elected to the Académie française, in 1980.
