Maria Sibylla Merian (b. Frankfurt, Germany, 1647 – d. 1717, Amsterdam, the Netherlands) was a German-born naturalist and scientific illustrator living in Amsterdam, a descendant of the Frankfurt branch of the Swiss Merian family. Merian was one of the early European naturalists to observe insects directly and lived in Dutch Surinam.
