Maria Engelbrecht Stokkenbech (1759-?) became a frontrunner for women’s right to work. She moved to Kiel, where she worked by assuming men’s clothing. She then travelled to Hamburg and found work as a tailor in the new clothes under the name Gotfried Jacob Eichstedt. After a few years in Germany, she returned to Copenhagen where she was given permission after controversy to « make a living as a tailor and sew men’s clothes ».
