Monique Wittig (b. Dannemarie, France, 1935 – d. 2003, Tucson, USA) was a French novelist, philosopher, theorist and lesbian feminist activist. She made a significant impact on feminist theory with the concept of “heterosexual contract”. In 1976, she moved to the United States with her partner Sande Zeig, following her marginalisation due to her lesbianism. In the United States, she worked as a visiting professor at several American universities, including Vassar College and the University of California at Berkeley. In 1990, Wittig became a professor in the Department of French Studies at the University of Arizona in Tucson. She died there from a heart attack.
