Alice Masaryková (b. Vienna, Austria-Hungary, 1879 – d. 1966, Chicago, USA) was a feminist, social activist, sociologist, teacher and politician. She was the daughter of the first Czechoslovak president Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk and his US American wife Charlotte Garrigue Masaryk. Alice was the first woman to earn a doctoral degree in history at Charles University in Prague (1903). During the First World war she was imprisoned for eight months in Vienna because of her father’s political activities. She was the founder and the first president of the Czechoslovak Red Cross. Upon the death of her mother in 1923 she informally took up the role of the Czechoslovak First Lady to assist her father in office till his death in 1937. After the Communist coup in 1948 she emigrated to the USA.
