Plaque and store named after Grethe Benediktsson

Grethe Benediktsson (b. Copenhagen, Denmark, 1909 – d. 1996, Reykjavík, Iceland) was born in Denmark and graduated from the University of Copenhagen in 1936. She married a fellow student, the Icelandic scholar and philologist Jakob Benediktsson, on 17 June 1936, and the couple decided to settle in Iceland in 1946, where they lived for the rest of their lives and where Grethe passed away in 1996. She held a degree in classical archeology but never worked as an archaeologist, instead teaching Danish at the University of Iceland and working as a translator. Her husband’s family in North Iceland named a store after Grethe, with a small plaque honoring her memory.
