The square is named after Rosa Luxemburg (b. Russia, 1871 – d. 1919, Berlin, Germany), a Polish Marxist, philosopher, economist, anti-war activist and revolutionary socialist who became a naturalized German citizen at the age of 28. Named Luxemburgplatz from 1947 to 1969, it was given the full name Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz by the East German regime in 1969.
