Statue of Queen Mary

Mary Thomas, better known as Queen Mary (b. Antigua, Caribbean 1848 – d. 1905, Copenhagen, Denmark) was one of the rebel leaders during the Great Fire of Frederiksted in the Danish West Indies in 1878. I Am Queen Mary is a transnational public art project to memorialize Denmark’s colonial impact in the Caribbean and those who fought against it. She was arrested and tried with other leaders of the labor uprising, and imprisoned in Denmark. In 2020 the Danish government granted permission to permanently install I Am Queen Mary in front of a former colonial warehouse in Copenhagen.
