Street named after Katerina Vitale

    Caterina Vitale (b. Greece, 1566 – d. 1619, Syracuse, Sicily) was the first female pharmacist and chemist in Malta and the first female pharmacist of the Knights Hospitaller, following the bequest of her late husband’s responsibility of providing pharmacies for the Sacra Infermeria. Her unconventional gender role at the time led to controversy, rumors, and slander. Yet, she was a successful entrepreneur and benefactor of the Carmelites.
