Letter from [Dr] Edward Trevor, [superintendent and medical inspector of convicts], Cove, [Cobh, County Cork], reporting on a complaint over the embarkation of a group of‘free settlers’ with female convicts

Letter from [Dr] Edward Trevor, [superintendent and medical inspector of convicts], Cove, [Cobh, County Cork], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, reporting on a complaint over the embarkation of a group of 50 ‘free settlers’ with a number of female convicts; indicating that an objection was raised by some of the governors of the Foundling Hospital in Cork, from whence the free settlers originated, over the planned journey in the company of convicts to New South Wales, [Australia]; confiding that the difficulty in question arose chiefly out of ‘a contemptible plan of a person named Packer’ who was determined to have the ‘sole management’ of the conveyance of the free settlers; adding that an arrangement has now been made to have the free settlers accompanied by a man and his wife who had been caretakers in the foundling establishment, and in addition another married couple under authority from the Navy Board. 1 item; 4pp
