National Immigration Office: Procedures for the voluntary return of immigrant workers to their country of origin (1977-1984)

This fonds is made up of two types of individual files: individual files for assisted return introduced in 1977 (with manual files of applicants, articles 1 to 25, and individual files of beneficiaries, articles 25 (cont’d) to 90) and voluntary returns to Algeria under the Franco-Algerian exchange of letters of 18 September 1980 (with manual files of files processed by the regional delegations in Nancy and Lyon, articles 90 (cont’d) to 106, and individual files of beneficiaries, articles 107 to 219). The documents listed in this deposit concern the two return procedures and were deposited by the Immigration Service (SIM) of the Office des Migrations Internationales. These are in fact files processed by the Office’s regional centres and/or the Service des mouvements migratoires (formerly SIM) which gave rise to payment and the manual files compiled for this purpose. The date used for archiving the files is the date shown on the form for payment of the remigration benefit, corresponding to the date of payment of the aid. This fonds therefore makes it possible to carry out a study of measures to encourage the return of immigrant workers to their country of origin for the period 1977-1984, by determining the amount of the sums granted and the profile of the beneficiaries and, where applicable, their families. We will be able to study the recipient’s gender, age, professional sector, place of residence in France, place of residence abroad and length of stay in France. A sample of individual files was taken at the time of archiving. Only certain years in which the files were closed were kept. This deposit contains 219 items. The files are not gender-disaggregated, but some concern migrant women.
