National Immigration Office: Procedures for the voluntary return of immigrant workers to their country of origin (1977-1984)

This fonds is composed of two types of individual files, and include women migrants: individual files on assisted return introduced in 1977 (with manual files on applicants, articles 1 to 25, and individual files on beneficiaries, articles 25 (cont’d) to 90) and voluntary returns to Algeria according to the Franco-Algerian exchange of letters of 18 September 1980 (with manual files on files processed by the regional delegations in Nancy and Lyon, articles 90 (cont’d) to 106, and individual files on beneficiaries, articles 107 to 219). The documents listed in this deposit concern the two return procedures and were deposited by the Immigration Service (SIM) of the Office des Migrations Internationales. These are in fact files processed by the regional centres of the Office and/or the Service des mouvements migratoires (former SIM) which gave rise to payment and the manual files constituted on the occasion. The date used for archiving the files is the date indicated on the liquidation form for the allocation of the return grant, corresponding to the date of payment of the aid.
This fund therefore makes it possible to study the measures to encourage the return of immigrant workers to their country of origin for the period 1977-1984, by determining the amount of money granted, the profile of the beneficiaries and possibly their families. In fact, it will be possible to study the sex, age, professional sector of the person concerned, his or her place of residence in France, his or her place of residence abroad, and the duration of his or her stay in France.
A sampling of individual files was carried out at the time of archiving. Only certain years of file closure were retained. This deposit corresponds to 219 articles. The files are not gendered, but some contain women.
