Polonska-Vasylenko Nataliia Dmytrivna (1884-1973)

    Nataliia Dmytrivna Polonska-Vasylenko (1884, Ukraine – 1973, Germany) was a historian, archaeologist, archivist, researcher at the All-Ukrainian University of Science and Technology of the USSR, and one of the most renowned Ukrainian historians of the 20th century. As the tide of war turned against the Germans, she fled West first to Lviv, then to Prague, and finally to Bavaria. She was a Professor at the Ukrainian Free University in Prague (1944–45), and moved together with this institution to Munich where she continued to teach until her death in 1973. In the 1960s, she took an active part in the establishment of the American-Based Ukrainian Historical Association and was its Vice-president from 1965. This fonds contains 2 items and 56 cases. There are 52 files in the first item and 4 in the second item. For instance, in the first item, one can find biographical documents and manuscripts used by N. Polonska-Vasylenko in her scientific work (bibliographic cards, information about the factories of Volyn province, corrections to the text of records from the deed books, etc. ): documents on official activities (regulations, statutes and reports, copies of minutes of meetings of the Kyiv Archaeological Institute, lists of employees); correspondence documents of N. Polonska-Vasylenko’s relatives (certificate of N. Polonska-Vasylenko’s father D. Menshov for the right to participate in the celebrations in Moscow on the occasion of the anniversary of the Battle of Borodino and the memory of the Patriotic War of 1812); statement of N. Polonska-Vasylenko’s mother M. Menshova on income taxed by the state income tax; correspondence with institutions and individuals). The second item is entitled “personal collection” and contains the scientific works of N. Polonska-Vasylenko on the history of Ukraine, her biography.
