The terrorist attack in Marchegg 1973

In 1973, two members of the PLO hijacked the Chopin-Express from Moscow to Vienna at the East-West border. The target was Jewish emigrants of both sexes from the USSR, heading to Israel via Austria. Six hostages were taken at the Marchegg train station. The terrorists opposed the Russian Jewish migration to Israel, organized by the Jewish Agency through Austria since 1965. Until the end of the Cold War, Austria served as a transit station for over 250,000 Eastern European Jews on their way to Israel.
