Collection: Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett-Browning Collection (UK: 1812–1889)
Description: Documents relating to the British poet Elizabeth Barret Browning (b. 1806 in Coxhoe, UK, d. 1861 in Florence, Italy). Elizabeth Barrett married the poet Robert Browning, with whom she eloped to Italy as her father had not allowed her to marry. She lived most of her adult life in Florence, Italy, where her home, Casa Guidi, has been made into a home museum. Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s home was one of the central gathering places for nineteenth-century British and American visitors in Florence, including the authors Nathaniel Hawthorne and Margaret Fuller. EBB, as she was called, is known for her political poem Casa Guidi Windows (1851) and her beautiful love poems collected in Sonnets from the Portuguese (1850).
