Collection: Jóhannes Einarsson and Sigurlaug Þorsteinsdóttir Fonds (Iceland, US and Canada: 1886–1947)
Description: Personal fonds of a married couple who left Iceland in 1889 in a family group that included Jóhannes’s widowed aunt and foster-mother Ovída Jónasdottir of Hvammur (1834–1909), the couple’s daughter Elína and two foster-children. They initially emigrated to North Dakota in the United States but moved in 1890 to the North West Territory (modern-day Saskatchewan), where they settled on a farm near Calder. Among the sources in the fonds are personal letters to Sigurlaug and Jóhannes, a diary kept by Jóhannes in 1889–1890, a speech held at Sigurlaug and Jóhannes’s golden wedding anniversary in 1936, a newspaper obituary on Sigurlaug’s death in 1944 and a photocopy of an account book belonging to Óvídá prior to her emigration (1886–1887).
