Noor Inayat Khan (b. Moscow, Russia, 1914 – d. 1944, Dachau, Germany) was born in Moscow to an Indian Muslim father and and American mother. The family moved to London in 1914, to France in 1920, and escaped German occupation back to England in 1940. Noor/Nora joined the Special Operations Executive and was the first woman sent to occupied France as a wireless operator. In October 1943, the only wireless operator remaining in Paris, she was betrayed and after 10 months shackled in solitary confinement was executed with three other women at Dachau (where there is also a plaque in her memory).
